Young Adult (YAs) Services

3 -  Services and Programming

The choices made in areas of services and programming can have a real effect on the lives of YAs just as the materials you offer.

Breaking through barriers, making some kind of connection with even one or two YAs, seeing them return to the library regularly with a mumbled hello on their way to the Internet computers is success.  Even more rewarding is hearing her rave about the last book you suggested, or how the program you provided on summer jobs gave him just the right information to land one, or seeing them become involved in the library through a Teen Advisory Board or volunteer group.

Library staff can effectively reach YAs through specially designed and thoughtfully implemented programming and services, ultimately becoming an entertainment option on level with video games and malls while still meeting their need for personal and educational enrichment and your goal of curriculum support.

This course will either introduce or serve as a review to basic components of services and programming for the young adult.
