How to design and present programs and workshops

After researching community needs and talking or polling area parents and day care providers about interests and desires, programs addressing these needs can be designed and implemented as a special program or on a weekly, monthly or semi-annual basis.

Below are some ideas for adult programs or workshops and important components:

Program: Parent Share Group

Target audience: Individual parents

How to present:  Informal meeting in conference/meeting room or storytime area

What to cover:  Can be divided into sections including what’s new in the library:  books, music, videos/DVDs, and toys/puppets; a speaker from the community on a topic of interest; leading a discussion on a topic and pointing out resources available to parents; leaving parents to talk amongst themselves.

Program: Library resources

Target audience: Parent groups, day care providers, students in early childhood program, social workers, health care providers, individuals

How to present:  Open house in entire library, workshop in conference room or on-site, small group in children’s area, drop-in one-on-one in children’s area

What to cover:  Reference and circulating books, special collections, magazines,   computer databases and early childhood games, library website and links, community information file, music, videos/DVDs, toys/puppets

Program: Choosing and sharing books

Target audience: Parent groups, day care providers, students in early childhood program

How to present:  Workshop in conference room or on-site, small group in children’s area

What to cover:  The different types of books and developmental level each is designed   for, how to match book with child or situation, what to look for in a book, how to hold a book, how to read to group of children

Program: Storytelling

Target audience: Parent groups, day care providers, students in early childhood program, social workers

How to present:  Workshop in conference room or on-site, small group in children’s story area

What to cover:  Different types of stories, how to engage audience, tips for memorizing story, how to use props

Program: Puppetry

Target audience: Parent groups, day care providers, social workers, health care providers

How to present:  Workshop in conference room or on-site, small group in children’s story area

What to cover:  Types of puppets, cultural connections, how to hold, how to move, how to make talk and interact with other puppets.
