Period Subject Headings

The fourth type of subject heading is the Period heading. This type of heading specifically relates to a time period. It may be the name of an historical event, such as CHACO WAR, 1932-1935, or AMERICAN REVOLUTION BICENTENNIAL, 1776-1976.

This type of heading may also be found as the name of a broader period in time, such as BYZANTINE EMPIRE, ENLIGHTENMENT (this is an 18th century intellectual movement), TWENTIETH CENTURY, or PALEOLITHIC PERIOD. Time period indicators may also be used as subdivisions, to indicate a time period specific to a particular topic. Examples of this type of heading would be PALEOCEANOGRAPHY—CENOZOIC, or CAPITALS (ARCHITECHTURE)—BYZANTINE INFLUENCES.

Another type of time period indicator frequently used as a subdivision is a range of dates. This type of subdivision helps to denote a specific range of years being covered by the library materials. These date ranges are often found under subdivisions such as HISTORY, ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, or POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT under geographic headings such as CHINA, FRANCE, OREGON, etc.
