Table of Pattern Headings
Library of Congress Subject Headings, 24th edition, p. xv. |
For example, consider a cataloger with an item for the library about whales. To find out what type of subdivisions could be used under the name of an animal, the cataloger would consult the subject heading FISHES or CATTLE in LCSH. Both of these headings are designated as pattern headings for the category ‘Animals’. Either one would provide an example of the options available for the cataloger to choose from, depending on what is appropriate for the item being cataloged and the patrons of the library. Another example would be using HEART or FOOT as examples of the various subdivisions usable for an item being added to the library about lungs. These headings are both pattern headings for the category ‘Organs and regions of the body’.
